Drugs and illicit cigarettes confiscated in police operation, suspects arrested

All the suspects have since appeared at the Madadeni Magistrate's Court.

Law enforcement officials are relentless in their efforts to stamp out crime in the area.

During an intelligence driven operation in the Osizweni policing area on August 17, members from Newcastle and the Osizweni Crime Prevention successfully rooted out suspects in possession of drugs and other illicit contraband.

“In Section A, a suspect was arrested for being in possession of 19 small parcels of cocaine and woonga,” confirmed Lizzy Arumugam of Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications.

“After that, members proceeded to Jakalaspan at Myandu Tuck Shop, where one suspect was arrested for selling 54 tobacco products (which were still against Government’s Covid-19 regulations at the time).”

While patrolling the area, members recovered a further 28 illicit tobacco products, and arrested one more suspect.

“Intelligence members then moved to Kunene Supermarket in Section A, where they recovered 128 tobacco products and arrested another suspect.”

Arumugam confirmed the street value for the drugs which were recovered during the operation was approximately R6 200.

“The suspects have appeared at the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court,” she concluded.
