Bring back the Drive-In

I know Ladysmith had a Drive-In many moons ago and the location is probably used for something else nowadays, but why not use the show grounds?

Hello, everybody. How are you all doing? I hope you are all well and safe. I think spring is around the corner. The usual August winds have made their annual appearance. I hope all the ladies had a nice Women’s Day.

Thank you for the extra holiday on Monday. How was your week? Mine was average. On the one hand, it was bad because two people I knew passed away due to the virus. At least I can comfort myself with the fact that they had a good life and I’ll always remember to enjoy every day I’m given. I also had my fill with all the reports in the media about corruption.

It never ends! On the positive side, it was my birthday week and the biggest present I received was when the government allowed rugby unions to prepare their teams for games. Hopefully in September, we will see some sort of competition. Let’s go, Sharks! Put a smile on our faces – just like Brad Binder did when he won the Czech MotoGP on Sunday.

I’m not really a racing fan, but that was a great race on Sunday. Congratulations to Brad. I also want to congratulate the residents of Bombay Road in Ladysmith. I saw an article on the Gazette’s website and it said they cleaned their own street without the help of the municipality. I applaud it 100% and they have proven to all of us that if you want something done, do it yourself.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this action spreads to other areas like  wildfire and encourages those residents to take action and fix their problems like potholes, rubbish piling up, broken pipes and broken streetlights by themselves. There are other examples, but you should get the gist of it. Let’s talk about something fun for the community.

I’m sure most of you know what a Drive-In is. If you don’t know, then use Google. Drive-Ins have been popping up in South Africa like toadstools these last few months due to the restrictions of movie theatres and the fact that people want to get out of their houses and have an outing, while being safe from the reach of the virus.

I know Ladysmith had a Drive-In many moons ago and the location is probably used for something else nowadays, but why not use the show grounds? I’m sure a few changes can be made to make it suitable; a movie schedule can be worked out and tickets made available to be sold.

Safety measures and regulations can be implemented, for example: Bring your own food. Alcohol and smoking will be prohibited. No disruptions will be allowed. Everyone must stay in their own vehicles and security guards will be on patrol. Cinema companies might pitch in and broadcast a few current movies.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the new James Bond film that is currently on ice. It sounds like a pipedream, I know, but what if? Have a great day.
