Eskom implements stage 2 load shedding – here’s where Newcastle stands
The Newcastle Municipality has implemented measures to ensure load-shedding is not necessary.
Eskom has issued a statement about the implementation of Stage 2 load-shedding.
The power utility stated that in order to reduce the negative impact, bigger customers will be asked to reduce their electricity consumption load and geysers will be switched off.
“Should that process not succeed, power will be switched off as per the municipality zone schedule, after an alert has been communicated with residents.”
The Newcastle Municipality has subsequently apologised for any inconvenience caused and has urged residents to use electricity sparingly.
“During the lockdown period, the Newcastle Municipality has done its best to mitigate the impact of load-shedding here,” explained Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo.
He added that these interventions included switching off geysers, asking big business to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours and constant communication and interaction with the community.
“This is the reason Newcastle has not had to deal with load-shedding. In fact, we are the only municipality in KwaZulu-Natal that has not been load-shed,” confirmed Khumalo.
He concluded by saying the geysers would be switched back on once Stage 2 has been lifted.
Stage 2 load-shedding began at 9am this morning and is expected to continue until 10pm.
