Dense black smoke descends on Bergville during fire

The smoke could be seen pluming into the sky for miles

Bergville residents were greeted with thick black smoke billowing into the air on Sunday afternoon (August 9) after a fire at the dump site spread rapidly.

The Fire Department stepped in to put out the blaze after a controlled fire quickly became unmanageable.

Farmers close to the landfill site say there was so much smoke in the air that it was like nighttime, as you couldn’t even see the sun. Neighbouring farmers commented that smoke poured into their barns, sheds and farmhouses.

It took Bergville firefighters about an hour to bring the fire at the dump site under control.

Residents became tourists in their own town, with people stopping to photograph the near post-apocalyptic scene.
