Saving grace for suffering animals

"The entire day was filled in the quest for less suffering"

Khetani Animal Rescue (KAR) proved to be a saving grace for a number of animals, as they partnered with the Mooi River & District SPCA for an outreach project in the rural areas of Winterton recently.

With the recently acquired R15,000 donation from the ‘virtual’ Polar Bear Swim held on June 20, KAR used R2000 to bring relief to some of the animals and their owners.

Accompanied by Inspector Wynand Strauss of the Mooi River & District SPCA, KAR members Lily and Reza visited areas that were previously identified to conduct inspections.

“Emaciated dogs, a goat with a broken leg, a toothless dog, chained dogs and endless breeding of puppies was found. Teaching, preaching, educating, confiscations and warnings followed,” said Judy van der Westhuizen from KAR, which is based in Winterton.

This is primarily what the organisation set out to accomplish when funds from the swim were received.

“The entire day was filled in the quest for less suffering. A follow-up is required. This area desperately needs an SPCA or a permanent venue for ongoing work and a fully trained officer,” added Ms van der Westhuizen.

KAR has also paid a R5000 vet bill, built an enclosure and purchased dog food from the R15,000 it received.
