BEWARE: Municipality warns of Covid-19 ‘donation’ scam

The public is urged to open a criminal charge if they have been defrauded.

Imposters have been soliciting funds from members of the public, using fraudulent municipal documents.

This was confirmed by Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo, who said these opportunistic ‘criminals’ have been asking for Covid-19 donations using fraudulent documentation bearing the logo and stamp of the Newcastle Municipality.

An example of the fraudulent donation form.

“The municipality categorically distances itself from this. We have no knowledge of this campaign and we are pleading with members of the public not to give these criminals money.”

Khumalo said it was unfortunate there were people willing to use the global pandemic to rob the public.
