Workers’ strike leads to “prolonged” disruption of service delivery

The unions said that workers will not resume work until management has resolved their grievances

uThukela District Municipality has released a media statement informing all residents of Ladysmith that the workers’ strike that started last week Tuesday (July 21) has led to a disruption of service delivery which is likely to continue into the foreseeable future.

According to uThukela communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza, disruption in water provision, including sanitation services, is expected to be “prolonged”.

This comes after the unions, namely SAMWU and IMATU, said that workers will not resume work until management has resolved their grievances.

The district municipality is expecting disturbances to normal water supply and sanitation services throughout most parts of the district.

Workers downed tools last week Tuesday, complaining about lack of personal protective equipment (PPE).

The municipality has put in place immediate temporary measures to ensure that water production processes and supply resumes while it attempts to resolve the labour impasse with the striking workers.

A meeting between uThukela management teams and union representatives is expected to take place tomorrow (Wednesday, July 29).

In the meantime, Ladysmith residents are “stranded” as far as having their water woes attended to.
