Lockdown has resulted in a drop in crime, says KZN Premier

'Criminals must not think they can use the lockdown to carry out their activities"

Reported crime in KZN has dropped by nearly a quarter since the latest lockdown restrictions were introduced on July 12.

Speaking to the media, Premier Sihle Zikalala, said the reduction in all categories of reported crime, showed a 24,2% reduction in contact crime as compared for the period July 12 -25,

“Contact crimes include murders, attempted murders, assaults, sexual offences (which includes rapes) and robberies. During the same period, we have also noted a 28.8% reduction in property crimes, which includes burglaries (both business and residential), theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles and stock theft,”Premier Zikalala said.

“Coupled with the implementation of these lockdown regulations, increased police operations have resulted in a large number of arrests for various crimes including for smuggling illicit cigarettes. Criminals have come up with innovative ways of smuggling contraband, however; police officers working at a number of roadblocks across the province have arrested them and seized massive quantities of counterfeit cigarettes.

“We hope that this is a wake up call for those that may think that they can use this period to commit crime in KZN.”
