Take back your child’s education – Mathematics Lesson 1

Former mathematics educator, Henry Junak says parents need to take their children's education into their own hands.

As a result of the global coronavirus pandemic and subsequent disruptions to the schooling year, former mathematics teacher Henry Junak advises parents to take the education of their children into their own hands.

Junak has therefore committed to giving parents, through the online platform of the Newcastle Advertiser, tools to help in the form of lessons.

These lessons will be suitable for learners from Grade 4 to Grade 7 and will deal with the basics of mathematics, with the intention of helping learners cope with the more difficult concepts they will encounter in high school.

“I have tried to make them as simple as possible so that parents themselves can understand and explain to their children. Included in the lessons are many strategies that can be employed to improve your child’s performance in maths. I have also included challenges that can improve your child’s problem-solving abilities with solutions being provided the following week,” explained Junak.

With his vast experience as a maths educator at primary and high school level, Junak believes he knows exactly what is expected of learners as they progress towards their secondary school education.

“It is crucial that your child masters the basics of mathematics at an early age so they get a good grounding which will help later.”

Junak said the intention of this project was to empower parents who are too often of the opinion that it is the job of the teacher only to educate their children.

“I hear the cry of many parents who seek help for their children. Many of them have forgotten how proud they were of their child when they learned how to count or spoke their first word. I want to remind them that every child is gifted – it just requires a dedicated parent to unwrap the package.”
