There’s a quote which says, ‘Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.’
For the past 44 years, Mr Vadival Govender did what he loved, working at Acutt and Worthington. Mr Govender started at the firm straight after leaving school, beginning as a Filing Clerk. Through his impeccable work ethic and his always willing to help nature, Mr Govender rose through the ranks and upon his retirement, was the Recovery Clerk, overseeing the whole department.
Through the many years of service, Mr Govender has worked with many directors and staff and seen many changes in technology. He fondly remembers the days of manual type writers before moving on to electronic ones and finally computers.
Mr Browning, who worked with Mr Govender for 42 years, recalls how they had to travel down to Durban for training on how to use a PC.
Describing him as ‘Mr Reliable’, Mr Browning added that he would miss working with Mr Govender. “We have grown together, working with each other over the years. His work ethic and enthusiasm is to be commended and he became a right hand man over the years,” Mr Browning said.
Mr Govender too expressed just how much he would miss his colleagues and the job. “For the past 25 years, I was always first at work, opening up the office for the start of day.” Even a simple thing as walking brings back fond memories for Mr Govender.
“I walked to work every day, but since my retirement, I haven’t done much walking at all.”
While Mr Govender has no immediate plans for how he intends to spend his retirement, he is always willing to lend a helping hand at Acutt and Worthington if need be. Though he may no longer be physically there, the job, the people and the clients he worked with over the years will always hold a special place in his heart forever.
