A police report indicates that on July 11 at about 7pm, three males were driving in their car in Bethany Road when they spotted the flashing headlights of a VW Polo, signaling them to stop.

Once they had stopped the vehicle, they were confronted by four armed men.

“The four men started assaulting the victims and shooting at them, without any provocation. In the process one of the victims was shot and stabbed and sustained injuries in the process,” commented police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi.

While being attacked, the victims reportedly shouted out for help, which alerted nearby community members that something was amiss.

“The community chased the suspects who disappeared into the nearby bush. One suspect was apprehended and assaulted by the community members. The suspect jumped into the back of the police van without instruction from the police because his safety was threatened,” explained Captain Nyathi.

Police recovered a 9mm Norinco pistol and two live round of ammunition from the suspect. The serial number on the firearm had been erased.

The man was taken to hospital to recover and will appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court when he is discharged.
He has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as carjacking.

“Bergville police are requesting anyone who can assist them in tracing the outstanding three suspects to contact 036-488-1998,” added Captain Nyathi.
