Pregnant woman killed in ‘farm attack’ identified

A seasoned team of detectives have begun investigating the attack

The 26-year-old woman who was brutally killed in a home invasion on Saturday, July 4, has been formally identified by police as Zakiah Amajal Ismail.

Zakiah was found in the bathroom with her throat slit after her family was attacked by three unknown suspects on the Ayoob’s farm in Weenen.

According to provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, at about 7pm on that fateful night, three suspects entered the house through an open back door. Zakiah’s husband, Ayoob Ismail, put up a fight but was eventually overpowered by the attackers.

Hearing the commotion, Zakiah, who was four months’ pregnant, rushed to the kitchen. The mother of two children, aged four and eight, was grabbed by the attackers and dragged to the bathroom, where they cut her throat. Her children were taken to another room. Zakiah was certified dead at the scene.

Captain Gwala added that a seasoned team of detectives have begun investigating the attack and will be working around the clock to solve the case.
