Uncertainty as Minister of Education, Angie Motshekga allows more grades to attend school

However, on Friday, it was confirmed that 26 teachers, three learners and five cleaners at 20 schools have tested positive for the virus

The Vryheid Herald’s Facebook Page was inundated with comments after a question regarding the opening of schools was asked.
This followed an article in the paper regarding reports of several positive Covid-19 cases at schools in the area. Upon initially reporting on the escalation of positive cases at schools, only seven schools had confirmed Covid-19 cases. However, on Friday, it was confirmed that 26 teachers, three learners and five cleaners at 20 schools have tested positive for the virus. Two deaths relating to Covid-19 have been reported. Last week, Vryheid High School also had to close their doors for deep cleaning after the acting principal confirmed that there was a learner who tested positive but was asymptomatic. On Sunday, Minister of Education Angie Motshekga confirmed that only Grade 6 and 11 learners will return to school and the other grades will be phased in at a later stage. Most of the readers expressed their concerns regarding the opening of schools and allowing more grades to attend school. The overall sentiment of the community is that schools need to close and online studying should continue as it has for the past three months, since level 5 of the national lockdown.
