Following several staff from Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality testing positive for Covid-19, a decision has been taken to temporarily close the municipal offices for a week.

This was announced by municipal manager Patrick Mkhize today (July 6) who said that the offices will be closed from July 7 until July 13.

“Soon after receiving suspected cases of the members of the public who visited the municipal offices while having tested positive, the municipality embarked on a massive drive of testing all employees. Since starting these tests, a number of them have come back positive and we are still waiting for others to come in as well,” explained Mr Mkhize.

Testing of essential service employees was a priority.

“We are mindful of the fact that essential service workers come in contact with large numbers of people, some of whom have tested positive. Sections where employees have gone for testing have closed to comply with the Covid-19 protocol,” said Mr Mkhize when speaking about the temporary closure of the testing and licensing station and emergency centre last week.

Going forward, he says, more municipal offices will be closed, as Mr Mkhize describes it as a ‘progressive process’.

“We are Liaising with the District Communicable Disease Centre to comply with Covid-19 protocols, being assisted by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Circular 34 of 2020, which deals with guidelines on how to handle Covid-19 incidents,” added Mr Mkhize.
