8 teas to keep at home for ordinary ailments

Winter is the perfect time to sip some tea to stay warm but why not try some of these teas for your everyday illnesses that creep up when you least expect them.

Boosting the immune system is all too important in this new age of Covid-19. And sometimes one does not have to look far for help.

There are over 3 000 types of tea in existence, and they come with a variety of benefits for all sorts of illnesses and conditions. Having a variety of teas in your home can help a great deal with headaches, stomach problems, weight loss and many other daily woes. Here are eight teas that you can keep at home in case any of these ailments creep up on you:

1. When you have flu, a headache or congestion, drink ginger tea

Ginger tea is a trusted, safe and relatively cheap way to fight a migraine, upset stomach or flu symptoms. You can brew it with fresh ginger, hot water, lemon and honey or buy the pre-packed ginger tea sachets. Make ginger tea your main drink in winter and you won’t regret the benefits.

2. For bad breath drink black or green tea

For a DIY cure for bad breath, drink black or green tea. Black tea helps control the plaque and bacteria that can cause bad breath. Green tea contains antibacterial properties that fight off the natural occurring germs in your mouth, keeping your breath fresh.

3. For anxiety and general jitters, drink passion flower tea

Passionflower, also called passiflora incarnate, is a herbal supplement used historically in treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures and hysteria. Drink the tea infused and it will help you with those overwhelming jitters.

4. When the allergies strike, drink nettle tea

Nettle leaves are very useful in reducing the symptoms of hay fever by acting as an anti-inflammatory. So if you suffer from seasonal allergies, it’s best to keep some nettle tea at home and drink it regularly to keep the allergies at bay.

5. If you’re detoxing or trying to lose weight, green tea is the one

Nothing is worse than 3am cravings when you are trying to lose weight or detox your system. Green tea is known for properties that help keep you hydrated and protect against chronic disease. It’s the weight loss choice as long as you do not over-do it. Drinking 3-6 cups a day could impair your nutrient absorption.

6. Having trouble sleeping? Try valerian tea

The valerian root is a strong sedative and has been used to help people fall asleep. Drink some valerian tea before you go to bed and you’re guaranteed a good night’s sleep.

7. Suffering from an upset stomach? Drink peppermint tea

Peppermint tea is not called “the stomach healer” for nothing. It is known to soothe many gastrointestinal ailments such as stomach aches, stomach pains, stomach cramps, heartburn, gas/flatulence, indigestion and diarrhoea. It promotes healthy digestion and is highly recommended.

8. Want to burn calories faster? Try Oolong tea

Oolong tea is great for weight loss and helping you burn calories faster. The Chinese have long believed that oolong tea is beneficial in reducing and maintaining weight. In a study in the 1980s, they found that participants burned more calories in a six week period drinking oolong tea than caffeinated water.
