Virus rumours have the power to ruin lives

The rumours spread quickly affecting her life and the lives of her family members

A simple rumour has the potential to ruin lives, as a Dannhauser resident found out at the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

When the country was still under level 5 lockdown regulations, the resident (who asked not to be named), underwent an operation at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban.

The hospital then became a hotspot for Covid-19 cases in KZN, prompting many to believe that the resident returned to Dannhauser with the virus. Those fears grew when Health Department officials visited her at her home to monitor her progress as well after the op.

“Rumours can spiral out of control and cause more panic. It even affected affected my family member’s lives. My brother was sent home from his workplace because people thought I had the virus.”

With the first confirmed cases now only surfacing in the town, the resident is hoping that community members will be more supportive of others.

“It’s important to respect the privacy of people and always show support where needed. With this pandemic, anyone can be affected. Them testing positive is not by choice.”
