Local businesses help water-less school

"On the first day of re-opening, we had to turn learners away because we still did not have water".

Local businesses Stillwater and Cashbuild have committed themselves to ensuring that Konfoor Combined School in Gluckstadt resumes teaching and learning, following delays due to lack of water.
Cashbuild donated a 2200-litre JoJo tank, and Stillwater will supply 40 litres of water on a daily basis.
The school, currently attended by 435 learners, did not open on June 8 when other schools re-opened for Grade 7 and 12 learners, as it did not meet the lockdown regulations. The school had no water.

“On the first day of re-opening, we had to turn learners away because we still did not have water. On June 11, Stillwater supplied us with 40 litres of water and we were able to allow the Grade 12 learners to return to school. Then, on June 15, the Grade 7 learners were also allowed back, as Stillwater kept on supplying us with water every day. Zululand District Municipality has also promised to deliver water to refill the JoJo tank,” said school principal Lungisani Shabalala.
Konfoor Combined School was one of 534 schools in the Zululand District that did not re-open on the announced date due to lack of water. According to the District Command Committee on Covid-19, of the 534 schools that had no water, only 36 were yet to receive water, as the others have now been catered for.
