A woman had her bank account looted to the tune of R113 000 by a man who pretended to be an insurance broker. Dundee SAPS said the woman, who was not named, was called by the man on the pretext of discussing her Old Mutual insurance policy.
The victim passed on her banking details so the ‘broker’ could ‘review her policy’. Later, she discovered that the money had been fraudulently withdrawn from her account.
She contacted the Dundee SAPS who followed up and discovered that the name the man gave to the woman was not a registered broker. A case of fraud is being investigated.
In another case of fraud reported to the Dundee SAPS, a woman was swindled out of R3 500, possibly by ATM scammers. She had originally gone to an ABSA ATM to withdraw money only to be told that she had insufficient funds in her account.
She then made queries at FNB where her account is held, where it was confirmed that the money had been withdrawn from her account without her knowledge. A case of fraud is being investigated.
