What exactly is your blood used for?

The SANBS is considered an essential service and have also assured donors that donating blood is safe during these times

World Blood Donor Day, celebrated every June 14, encourages people to do a good deed and donate.

However, many are hesitant to do so. citing that they never know what the blood is used for.

The SANBS has broken down the actual distribution, so people know exactly where their donations go.

28% is used to treat cancer and aplastic anaemia
27% is used during childbirth
21% is used for scheduled surgery
10% is used for paediatric care
6% goes to laboratories
6% is used for orthopaedic care
4% is used for accident or trauma victims

The SANBS is considered an essential service and have also assured donors that donating blood is safe during these times.

SANBS explains why donating blood is safe

Minimum requirements to be a donor:
* Be between the ages of 16 and 65 years old.
* Weigh more than 50kg.
* Be in good health.
* Live a sexually safe lifestyle.
