Newcastle SAPS warns residents to be vigilant

Residents have been urged to not walk alone, but to walk in groups as there is strength in numbers.

Newcastle SAPS have urged residents to be vigilant as they investigate three cases of robbery and one of theft, which all happened during the day, this June.

A case of robbery is being investigated that occurred on June 1, on Sutherland Street. Lizzy Arumugam from SAPS Corporate Communication, said the victim alleged she was walking on the street when she was robbed:

“Two unknown African males approached her and grabbed her cell phone and ran away. Police investigations are still underway,” stated Arumugam.

Another incident of robbery happened on June 5, at the corner of Memel and Allen Streets. Arumugam said the victim alleged he was walking on the street when three African males threatened him with a knife and took cash and a cellphone, and ran away.

Osizweni SAPS are also investigating a case of robbery which occurred on June 7, near the Osizweni Library.

“The complainant alleged he was threatened with a knife by two unknown African males and robbed of his cash,” said Arumugam.

Meanwhile, Normandien Police are investigating a case of theft that occurred on June 3 and 4. The complainant alleged he noticed power cables were hanging from their home, and the solar panel which powers the electric fence was missing, which is valued at R16 000.

Investigations are currently underway for all crimes indicated.

The SAPS Newcastle Communications Department offered the following advice concerning personal safety and security:

Do not walk alone. Walk in groups with co-workers, as there is strength in numbers.
Convey a sense of confidence and do not present yourself as timid or lost while walking.
Dress appropriately, wear shoes that you can run in, if necessary.
Do not display your valuables, such as watches and jewellery in plain view.
Always be alert of your surroundings. Look around and be observant, and do not become distracted by telephone conversations, window shopping, etc.
Walk in well-lit and high traffic areas, where you can both see and be easily seen.
Use sidewalks and stay near the street away from dark building entryways.
Avoid shortcuts through alleys and wooded areas.
Immediately report all suspicious activities to the police.
If you are being followed by someone on foot, immediately cross the street and proceed to a location where there are other people.
Above all else, always trust your instincts; they are usually correct. If something doesn’t seem right, remove yourself from the situation immediately.
