Grade 7 pupils back at a practically empty Hamilton Prep

Not only did the Grade 7s have the whole campus to themselves, but they also had to get used to the new normal of screening at the front gate, wearing masks, and adhering to social distancing

The Grade7 pupils at Hamilton Preparatory returned to school on Monday (June 1).

This after the Minister for Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshega, announced that for primary schools, only Grade 7 learners would be allowed to return to school under strict regulations in level 3 lockdown.

Speaking to Hamilton Prep headmistress Bridget Painter, she says teachers have reported that the pupils are rather subdued, either from all the changes or from being out of practice after nine weeks of ‘remote’ teaching at home.

“Not only did the Grade 7s have the whole campus to themselves, but they also had to get used to the new normal of screening at the front gate, wearing masks, and keeping a certain distance between them and their friends,” explained Bridget.

The headmistress added that, as a school, it will take them a while to get used to the ‘new normal’.

“These changes are going to take us all a while to get used to, but it is what we have to do to keep everyone safe. It shouldn’t be too long before the Grade 7s settle in though. When the other grades return, the campus will come back to life again,” said Bridget.
