IFP must fire Zululand mayor for corruption and maladministration

We propose that the mayor do the right thing and resign on his own, and save the people of Zululand.

The report that was tabled ‘virtually’ in the Zululand District Municipality (ZDM) has proved beyond a reasonable doubt what we have been saying all along: that corruption, fraud and maladministration is the order of the day in the district.
Since the beginning of 2019, during my time as the caucus leader for the opposition, we pressured MEC for Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs Sipho Hlomuka to start an investigation following countless irregularities in the district.
The MEC finally bowed down to our pressure and instituted an investigation in September 2019.
The report revealed many wrongdoings that we raised countless times in the district. These include:
– The dismissal of Mr SB Nkosi as ZDM Municipal Manager. The report found that the resolution to dismiss him was unlawful and invalid.
– The payment of Aros security service double what other companies charge the municipality and the hiring of extra security without proper process.
– The payment of almost 14 mayoral bodyguards, amounting to R402,000, including his hired car.
– The procurement of an Aqua water truck without due process.
These findings vindicate us on our stance not to support the mayor on his power trip, where he wanted to open the doors of corruption in the district.
The report recommends that the mayor be suspended and charged for contravening the Code of Conduct of Councillors.
The council has been given 21 days to implement the report’s recommendation, after which the MEC will take action.

We propose that the mayor do the right thing and resign on his own, and save the people of Zululand.
For years, people have been without basic needs, including water, roads and light.
The mayor was not shy to take the little from this district for his greed.
We call upon his party, the IFP, to do the right thing and fire him from his position, and all members who supported him in his quest to steal from the people.
This report once again proves my fight for clean governance in the Zululand District. This report has proven that the people of Zululand have been short-changed by people who don’t put them first, but their needs first. A new administration and executive is needed in Zululand to restore the district to clean governance and provide much-needed service delivery to the people.
