Covid-19: New court regulations in Ladysmith

Before a person is allowed inside the court premises, they are sanitized and their temperature is checked

The Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court has restricted the number of people coming into the building due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Court manager Mr Sifiso Shozi says that each and every person working at the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court is regarded as an essential worker. “The only people asked to remain at home are disabled people and those above 60 years of age.”

Before a person is allowed inside the court premises, security personnel make sure the person gets sanitized and that his or her temperature is checked.

Due to the pandemic, only one family member is allowed to come in and listen to court proceedings.

“We only let people with material interest in the case come into the court building, namely the accused, one family member, a witness or someone who comes to bail out a person in custody. In addition, we only certify documents for essential use, such as documents needed at Home Affairs,” explained Shozi.

He added that working hours have also changed and that the court now runs from 7.45am to 4.15pm.
