40% of brides-to-be want to be involved in ring selection

Traditionally the Groom chooses the engagement ring for his bride, one of the few choices he has to make for the wedding. However, modern “bridezillas” are taking control of this, too, with an increasing number of girls choosing their engagement ring.

Should the groom select the romantic notion of a surprise proposal with a surprise ring, or the safe option of knowing that his bride will love her bling… because she chose it? Or does the entire idea ruin the spirit of the engagement tradition?

If a proposal comes out of the blue, having an engagement ring that the groom chose by himself is extremely romantic.  He could pick something that he knows you will like because you’ve vaguely spoken about it, or he could pick something that you wouldn’t initially go for but you still fall in love with.  Having him choose the engagement ring with no involvement or help from the bride does make it more meaningful.

The downside is surprising you with a hand-chosen ring might put him at risk of you not liking it.
Some grooms are so worried about picking wrong design, they don’t even propose with a ring – instead, he takes the bride-to-be ring shopping straight after the proposal… providing she said yes, of course! Women can be picky, and if there’s one thing she’ll want you to get right, it’s this – the one piece of jewellery she’s going to have to wear for the rest of her life.  No pressure then!
If you thought your other half was preparing to propose, would you start dropping hints about the style of ring you like?

Forget the leap year; women have been choosing their own engagement rings for years.
2020 saw the first leap day since 2016, with age old traditions predicting that women across the globe proposed to their partners having patiently endured a 4 year wait since their last opportunity.  But is this year’s leap day the cause of the unprecedented increase in female engagement ring buyers that we’ve become so accustomed to of late? In a word: no.  Forget the leap day proposal, here’s why women are buying their own engagement rings, year-round:

The end of the last decade saw a huge shift in the amount of women buying engagement ring, thanks to non-surprise proposals, post-proposal ring commissions and loose diamond proposals on the rise.  As the trajectories of the typical millennial relationship evolved throughout the 2010’s, changing financial dynamics within contemporary couples contributed to the increase in female purchasing power – and the engagement ring industry was not to be left behind!  Couples now are very pragmatic, they’re often living together first and talking about the future more and they’re being sensible how they spend their money.  Couples like the idea where they design the engagement and wedding bands together.  The total wedding budget is often left to the bride and she actually purchases both rings from a mutual fund account.
