Bodyguard charged with illegal firearm possession

Other arrests included charges ranging from selling or dealing in liquor to the illegal sale of cigarettes and the selling of non-essential goods

Close to 70 people have been arrested over the past week and charged for various offences after flouting lockdown regulations.

In one of the more high-profile cases, a bodyguard at Umzinyathi District Municipality was apprehended at a police roadblock after he was found in possession of a 9mm firearm that was not registered in his name. It was registered under the municipality.

He was also found not to be in possession of a competency certificate and was detained in police cells before appearing in court, where he was granted R1000 bail.

Other arrests included charges ranging from selling or dealing in liquor to the illegal sale of cigarettes and the selling of non-essential goods (including prepared food), as described in the Lockdown Level 4 Regulations. Some of the cases have been remanded for later dates.

Police warn that those who do not abide by lockdown regulations “will be arrested and dealt with”.
