Investigation continues: Ben’s murder

When the perpetrators are behind bars, then it will hopefully bring some kind of solace to loved ones and justice for a young life lost

After almost seven years, a murder is still haunting the residents of Vryheid…
The bottomless pit of unanswered questions lingers and a mother is unable to get closure after her son was senselessly killed.
Ben van der Westhuizen’s body was found a few days before Christmas 2013. Van der Westhuizen, who was a well-known mechanic in town, was testing a motorcycle he had repaired when the murder took place. According to police, the cause of death was a blow to the back of the head by a blunt object. The young man’s body was discovered in a field near the Farmer’s Hall in Stretch Crescent, and the only item missing was his cell-phone.
It is believed that he was overpowered and killed by a gang of troublemakers who dumped his body in the field.
An investigation was launched to try and bring those responsible for the murder to book, but to no avail.
The Herald recently followed up on the case with the investigating officer. He stated that the case is in an advanced stage of the investigation.
When the perpetrators are behind bars, then it will hopefully bring some kind of solace to loved ones and justice for a young life lost.
