Women arrested after baby is found buried in shallow grave

The tiny body was taken to the government mortuary

A 34-year-old woman residing in the Tsakane area was arrested on Thursday, May 7, after the body of a newborn baby was found buried in a shallow grave near her home.

Police spokesperson Captain Bongani ‘Skhindi’ Nyathi said that police received a tip-off. When officers went out to the area, they found the mother and a friend who is alleged to have helped the mother to commit this crime.

The two women showed the officers where they had buried the baby. The tiny body was then taken to the government mortuary.

Both women were arrested. The friend was arrested for helping the mother to conceal a crime.

Both women appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court yesterday (May 11). The friend was released and the mother detained. The mother will be appearing in court again today (May 12), facing murder charges.
