Drastic change in mindset needed to curb Covid-19 pandemic

"If people do not make drastic changes to how they do things, it has the potential to cause high levels of mortality..."

Alfred Duma Local Municipality and uThukela District Municipality are actively involved with screenings and getting people tested in vulnerable communities in and around Ladysmith.

The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is a crisis in all nations across the world, regardless of geographic and political systems. The municipality says this is exactly the reason why our government has taken such drastic measures to curb the spread of the virus by conducting mass community screening and testing programmes.

These programmes that have been put in place aim to ensure that vulnerable communities are screened and tested in large numbers so that people are ultimately protected from contracting the virus.

A screening and testing programme was held in Peacetown, Ward 15, under Alfred Duma Local Municipality on Thursday (May 7).

Dr T Zulu led the District Command Council (DCC) that joined the Local Command Council (LCC) to do the screening and testing.

The district municipality says, “As foot soldiers taking this programme to each and every local municipality in this district, the purpose is to reach as many people as possible.”

Numerous teams were formed and headed out in different directions to carry out the day’s work.

What they observed though was that, like in most areas visited so far, people in Peacetown were not observing the lockdown regulations. To them, it was business as usual, as they were still roaming the streets.

Some families were however found to be complying with the lockdown.

The municipality ended off by saying, “The coronavirus outbreak represents a significant risk to the population, not only in the district, the province and the country, but the entire world. If people do not make drastic changes to how they do things, it has the potential to cause high levels of mortality, and pose a major threat to our social and economic security.”
