Soldiers stand together in times of war

Newcastle's M.O.T.Hs members extend their gratitude to soldiers on the front line in the war against Covid-19.

Nobody understands the sacrifices soldiers make to protect the nation in times of war better than someone who has walked a mile in their boots, believes Ferdie Alberts, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

Newcastle’s retired soldiers expressed their gratitude to soldiers who have been deployed to fight the war against the coronavirus. Local M.O.T.Hs (Memorable Order of the Tin Hats) members treated SANDF soldiers who have been stationed in Newcastle, delivering all the items they would need for a lekker braai to their door. Items sponsored by local businesses including warm blankets, masks and hand sanitizer were delivered as well.

The M.O.T.Hs, established in 1927, is a brotherhood of former front-line soldiers who assist comrades who encounter financial hardships, and keep memories alive of comradeship, self-sacrifice and the virtues that war brings forth. Newcastle’s branch of the service organisation currently has 60 active members.

“We have seen media reports in which our soldiers have been criticised for using force. One must understand that the army is not trained to be deployed in situations like this. They are trained for war. What makes it especially difficult, is when people don’t listen and they just don’t seem to care. My feeling is that if you don’t abide by the important regulations handed down by our president, then you must face the music. I have full respect for the work the soldiers are doing under the circumstances,” said Mr Alberts.

“The M.O.T.H’s usually reach out to former soldiers who are battling to make ends meet, but in this instance we felt it was important to also take care of our serving soldiers. As old soldiers, ourselves, we really understand and appreciate what they are doing,” he concluded.
