Senior official and police spokesperson say no permits needed to buy groceries

"No permits required for groceries, medical treatment, buying of medication, collecting your social grants and going to the bank"

uThukela District Communications Manager Mr Jabulani Mkhonza says that residents of Ladysmith do not need to produce a permit when going to buy groceries.

“There’s no permit you need when you’re going to do grocery shopping. The only permit is for essential services workers. This is made available by individual workplaces, specifically for essential services workers.

“People must observe the lockdown and not move around unnecessarily,” said Mr Mkhonza.

When asked, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo (national police spokesperson) also said, “There are no permits required for groceries, medical treatment, buying of medication, collecting your social grants and going to the bank. I am not sure why these people were asked for permits, if indeed they were asked.”

This was the brigadier’s response to questions regarding why local police are stopping each and every vehicle at roadblocks and sending them home if they did not have a permit or said they were going shopping.
