Covid-19: Police and army to continue massive crackdown in Ladysmith

Expect tougher action by police as the lockdown continues into the week

A joint operation between soldiers and police against ‘lockdown breakers’ has continued today (April 22), with soldiers, Public Safety and police officers setting up roadblocks throughout the district.

The South African Defence Force (SANDF), working jointly with police and other stakeholders, yesterday conducted roadblocks around Ladysmith, where they checked for permits. Today, officers have continued operations to curb lockdown abuse.

At roadblocks, security forces are checking motorists and passengers for permits. Those who do not have the correct forms are being sent back home.

At a roadblock in Helpmekaar Road, close to 10 people were sitting next to the road waiting to get lifts home after being ejected by police from taxis after they failed to produce permits to come into town. Others could be seen slowly walking home.

According to Ladysmith Station Commander Brigadier FB Alexander, people should only be going to town to buy essential groceries.

People caught on foot are being interrogated by the officers and those without a valid reason for being on the street are being arrested.

Over 70 people have ‘visited’ Ladysmith prison, before appearing in front of a magistrate, where they are ordered to pay R1000 or spend a month in jail.

Moving fast, the team of soldiers and police officers deployed roadblocks rapidly throughout town – including the CBD, Peacetown, Burford and Observation Hill – in yesterday’s operation. Other areas will be visited today.
