Total lockdown being enforced in Estcourt

After enforcing a total lockdown in Estcourt today (April 21), police spokesperson Warrant Officer Sihle Mazibuko says that locals are being compliant.

Teams of law enforcement officers comprising of the police, protection officers, Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and South African National Defence Force (SANDF), are stationed at all entry points in town.

W/O Mazibuko explained that anyone found in the central business district (CBD) without a valid reason is being sent back home.

“No one is allowed to be in town, stay at home,” he said.

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality’s protection service officers are also out on the road and appeal to locals to stay off the streets. Phillip Hellerle from the Protection Service said that officers are restricting movement of vehicles coming into town.

“The vehicles are being checked and if the reason for being in town is unwarranted, motorists are turned away to go back to their residences. Shops have made provisions for customers to buy their essential items and they are adhering to social distancing. We appeal to everyone to adhere,” said Mr Hellerle.

Locals are advised to utilise tuck shops in residential areas, instead of travelling into the CBD. If you have to travel to town to purchase essential items, please enquire from your neighbours if they need any items and offer to purchase it for them. This is decrease the number of people on the street.
