Covid-19: Massive police and army crackdown in Ladysmith

Army and police show no mercy to 'lockdown breakers'

In a joint operation between soldiers and the police, ‘lockdown breakers’ felt the full force of the law.

The South African Defence Force (SANDF), working jointly with police (TRT), conducted roadblocks around Ladysmith, where they checked for permits.

The roadblocks started early Tuesday morning (April 21) with security forces checking motorists for permits. Those who did not have the correct forms were sent back home.

People caught on foot were interrogated by the officers and those without a valid reason were arrested.

Moving fast, the team of soldiers and police officers deployed roadblocks rapidly throughout town – including the CBD, Peacetown, Burford and Observation Hill.

Roadblocks were set up at all entrances leading in and out of Ladysmith.
