Thieves target local old age home

The theft is believed to have taken place between 4am and 5am.

The La Bri Retirement Village flats was broken into early yesterday morning.

The theft is believed to have taken place between 4am and 5am.

According to management of the home, 12 wall-mountable emergency lights (valued at R400 each), rechargeable battery packs, garden furniture and pottery were stolen.

“All of the residents have a panic button with them at all times – this is to ensure the safety of everyone and to raise the alarm if there is anything suspicious occurring on the property,” said Chief Executive Officer of La Gratitude, Jomari Batista.

She explained no panic button was pressed by any of the residents.

“The majority of the residents are early risers, and can often be found roaming around outside for fresh air in the early mornings. No resident used their panic button, under the assumption it was their next door neighbour moving around outside.”

Batista said there was no evidence of a disturbance on the property when she visited the premises with local law enforcement.

“There were no boot marks on the wall nor anything showing the suspects had climbed over the fencing. The items which were stolen are not easy to move; it would take a great effort to remove the stolen goods off the property.”

SAPS is investigating the matter and is said to be monitoring the premises in the meantime.
