Chopper lands to airlift young baby

A Bell 222 helicopter landed on the helipad at Ladysmith Provincial Hospital today (Saturday, April 18) with Netcare 911 paramedics on board to transport a young baby to Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

The baby was moved in a special NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) container brought to the hospital in the helicopter. The baby was placed in the NICU container inside the hospital before being taken out to the waiting helicopter.

Pilot Mark Vonsorgenfrei confirmed that the trip would take little under 55 minutes, with the baby being cared for by two paramedics.

As soon as the baby was on board, the helicopter lifted off.

At the time of going live with this story the hospital had not confirmed why the patient was being airlifted.

Update:

The baby was born prematurely and was transferred to Grey’s Hospital in a critical condition. No more information will be available until an official press release is issued by the hospital.
