The Uthukela District Command Centre led by the District Mayor Cllr AS Mazibuko joined the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality mass community screening and testing programme yesterday (April 14).

The programme started by conducting a roadblock on the main road in Loskop, Magonsi area.

Every vehicle going in both directions on this busy road was stopped and checked. Commuters were screened and informed about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was explained that the screenings ensure that health professionals have a record to enable them to keep track and trace, should anything unforeseen happen.

It was emphasised to the motorists that no one must be on the roads without the necessary permits, or else people will face the full might of the law.

Nine teams were formed and headed to the KwaVala area to perform door-to-door mass screenings.

The main challenge was that households are scattered around as this was a rural area. One household had a family of 46 members living together.

In his closing remarks after the activities the Mayor Cllr Mazibuko said, “We have observed in our roadblock exercise this morning that people still go around with children. We need to do more to educate our people about the dangers associated with roaming around. We wish to thank those people who are in the frontline because they are the ones who are at risk. We need to press on. People’s mindset is that they disregard the lockdown regulations. Our exercise thus forms part of profiling as well”.

On water related issues the Mayor and the technical team, soon after, went to Ward 2 in Emandabeni to check on the spring that has been refurbished. The project is being undertaken by Sydwalt Construction. The spring is connected to 10 000l static tank with 4 standpipes supplying water to this community.

The team then visited Ward 18 in Phangweni to do an inspection of the windmill that will soon be refurbished. The service provider will also increase the capacity of the static tank.
