Al-Imdaad Foundation provides tanks for water-starved communities during lockdown

The Al-Imdaad Foundation partnered with Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality and Operation Sukuma Sakhe to provide 30 water tanks and 200 five-litre bottles of water

As part of ongoing Covid-19 relief activities, the Al-Imdaad Foundation is providing tanks (Jojo / eco) and five-litre bottled water to communities facing water shortages during the lockdown.

The foundation says that the emphasis on good hygiene and sanitation in the fight against Covid-19 cannot be over-emphasised, but so many communities are without adequate access to safe water. During the lockdown period, numerous families find themselves without sufficient water to meet their needs, placing them at added risk.

To address this, on March 31, the Al-Imdaad Foundation partnered with Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality and Operation Sukuma Sakhe to provide 30 water tanks and 200 five-litre bottles of water to help water-stressed communities.

The tanks were handed over as part of the roll-out of a Covid-19 intervention programme at Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality. They will be installed at public access points in areas without sufficient supply and will be refilled regularly by water tanker services.

Al-Imdaad Foundation co-ordinator Mr Abed Karrim said, “We are happy to provide these tanks for the fight against the pandemic.”

Mr Karrim explained that after receiving requests from authorities in various areas, the foundation was focusing on providing static water tanks (Jojo / eco) for rural communities, informal settlements and wherever there is a need to improve hygiene.

Tanks have also recently been collected from the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s warehousing in Ladysmith for eThekwini Metro Municipality and rural areas in the Harry Gwala and Ugu districts.

“Distribution plans for these tanks will be rolled out this week with the Provincial Department of Social Development,” said Mr Karrim.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation has also been distributing food hampers to vulnerable groups and feeding homeless people during the lockdown. Mr Karrim added that, “The Al-Imdaad Foundation has been assisting homeless communities during the lockdown at temporary residence sites in Ladysmith, Dundee, Estcourt and Bergville, as well as in the bigger cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Interventions have included blankets, mattresses, hygiene items and food.”
