UPDATE: Ward councillors will not be handing out grocery hampers

Ward councillors have not been allocated funding for aid initiatives, but can assist in identifying those in need of aid.

The Newcastle Advertiser is clarifying information in a previous article, about contacting ward councillors for help with aid during the lockdown.

Concerned ward councillors have approached this publication saying they have been inundated with calls from residents, who are under the impression that they – personally – will be handing out grocery hampers.

Aid initiatives are in fact being carried out by several local volunteers and civic organisations, who have asked ward councillors to help identify families in need of help.

During this process, ward councillors will assist in identifying families within their wards who are faced with difficulties and will refer the identified parties to relevant organisations for further assistance where possible.
