Inspector cares for animals at SPCA Newcastle during lockdown

"Our highest priority is to ensure the animals are well cared for and kept safe."

With the country in the grip of the national lockdown, the SPCA Newcastle holds onto hope.

“This is a very difficult time we are facing, but the SPCA plans to keep its head held high and continue to protect animals against cruelty or violence,” said the society’s Heather Gero.

She explained the facility has had its fair share of challenges and obstacles since the outbreak of Covid-19, but promised that business would ‘continue as usual’. The main challenge at this stage is having no staff on hand.

“Our highest priority is to ensure the animals are well cared for and kept safe. The SPCA’s Inspector, Suveshin Naidoo has played a big role in ensuring everything runs smoothly at our facility for the next 21 days.”

With few members of staff to assist, Naidoo has stepped in to personally care for the animals currently placed at the SPCA. His daily tasks include cleaning the kennels, plus feeding, grooming and providing comfort and exercise for the animals.

“Suveshin is positive and selflessly puts the animals before himself. The community can be assured the animals are in very loving and capable hands,” Gero added.

During this time of emergency, Gero continued, it was up to residents to act responsibly and care for their animals in the correct manner. A resident who is unable to care for their pet due to illness, is urged to contact the SPCA for assistance.

“We are still responding to cruelty cases and our Inspector is always on standby to lend a helping hand. We ask for the support of the community by donating items of food for the animals. We have established a drop-off point based at the Ncandu Veterinary Clinic, where residents can drop off donations.”

The SPCA emergency number is: 072 337 0347.
