Healthcare workers are afraid too, admits Ngubane

District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane says the coronavirus epidemic has shocked even medical professionals.

Medical staff are afraid and that’s perfectly normal, believes Amajuba District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane.

“They are only human, just like everybody else. When you train at university to become medical professionals, one of the things they train you on is how to handle a deadly pandemic… But you never expect it to happen in your lifetime. Coronavirus has shocked everybody, medical staff included.”

As medical professionals themselves, Dr Ngubane and Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba have hung up their mayoral chains, picked up their stethoscopes and joined the frontline battle against Covid-19.

“I understand first-hand how our medical staff must feel. The truth is, you don’t know if you are exposed to the virus while carrying out your duties and you are always afraid you may be taking it home to your families,” sympathised Dr Ngubane. “However, your calling to save the lives of our people has to be stronger than your fear. We are the first people who are approached when members of our community are worried or unwell. It is our job to reassure them and give them hope. Let’s love the career we have chosen. Let’s make our contribution and give the best gift it is possible to give – the gift of life. Let’s do what needs to be done to ensure the threat of this virus passes, and there is a future ahead of all of us when it does.”

Dr Ngubane assured the Newcastle Advertiser that, in the Amajuba District, doctors and nurses are equipped with the correct protective equipment to handle Covid-19 cases.

“We have heard in other parts of the country, that doctors and nurses have become infected after treating infected patients. In our district, that has not been reported. We do not want to say errors will not happen in the future as cases increase, but so far we are satisfied with the safety of all those who directly deal with the patients,” he stated.
