Grant queues form outside post offices and supermarkets

SAPS patrols, backed up by traffic officers and private security, were out on patrol to ensure everyone's safety.

Snaking queues outside the Dundee and Glencoe Post Offices and local supermarkets, have marked the start of day four of the national 21-day lockdown.

At the Dundee Post Office, social grant recipients of all ages stood shoulder to shoulder, with little thought of the recommended social distancing policy intended to keep the Covid-19 virus from spreading. Local supermarkets tried to implement social distancing, by ensuring people stood at least a metre apart.

Captain Veli Mbense of Dundee SAPS said police officers would be going to the post office to ensure people adhered to the social distancing recommendations.

Recipients in the queue, who did not want to be named or have their photos taken, said their biggest fear was being robbed while walking home after receiving their SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) grants.

Capt Mbense said SAPS patrols, backed up by traffic officers and private security personnel, were out on patrol to ensure everyone’s safety.
