Buying power online – a handy tool during the lockdown

You can buy electricity online without leaving your home, say municipal officials.

Buying electricity for prepaid meters has become a problem for many Endumeni residents since the national lockdown began. The Courier has been inundated with calls from concerned residents, who may not be able to access the vendor they normally use to purchase power.

WireIT is the ideal online solution to ensure residents are able to keep the lights on during the 21-day lockdown, according to Charl Wait of Endumeni Municipality. The system allows one the freedom to choose the payment method and bank from which they wish to purchase prepaid electricity tokens.

Step one: Register your 11-digit meter number via SMS to 36073 or via the Internet with a valid email address. You will receive a SMS reply within a few minutes confirming you have been successfully registered.

Step two: You now have the ability to deposit money into a nominated WireIT bank account, using your meter number as a reference number. The following banks are supported – ABSA, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank.

Step three: Make WireIT a bank defined beneficiary on your online banking platform. Use your meter number as a reference.

Step four: You will receive a prepayment token (the 20-digit numeric number) via SMS or email (your preference). Key the token number into your keypad on your prepaid meter and you have power!

This system will help you avoid queues and allow you to purchase power at your own time, via your cellphone or Internet. There is also a Wire IT Call Centre to assist you with queries: 087 742 0459.

If your token does not work in your meter, call the Municipality and not WireIT. If no token is received once you have paid, it could be that the amount purchased is lower than the stipulated minimum purchase. Ensure the correct cellphone number is registered with WireIT!
