Notice barring landlords from collecting rent is fake news

Some Newcastle tenants are attempting to use an official-looking notice, which purports to come from Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, to avoid paying rent over the next three months.

The notice, which allegedly bars landlords from collecting rent over the next 90 days, reads as follows:

“We regrettably with to inform you all that due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has affected the daily routine of our people, I want to kindly urge you not to collect rent money from your tenants for the next 90 days.”

It goes on to warn that transgressors will face a fine or up to six months imprisonment. This notice was debunked as fake news on the South African Government website on March 22.
