First confirmed case of Covid-19 in Ladysmith

Middle-aged man returning from a trip overseas tests positive

A 39-year-old man who recently returned from a trip to Asia has tested positive for the Covid-19 virus (coronavirus).

The Ladysmith man landed at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday last week and passed all anti-virus security measures at the airport with flying colours. On arriving in Ladysmith on the Wednesday to satisfy himself, he had himself tested at a private laboratory in town.

He maintained self-isolation after going for the test. But after hearing nothing by Friday, he assumed he was clear and returned to work.

Today (March 24), he received his results from the private laboratory, confirming that he has Covid-19. He is once again in self-isolation as he waits for the Department of Health to visit him. He will be furnishing the department with details of everyone he came in contact with and is co-operating fully.

Up until now, he has no symptoms of Covid-19: no cough or sore throat.
