Dancers raise more than 30K for drought-stricken farmers

On Friday night, with the hashtag #laatditpompvirdieboere, residents came together at the Boerevereniging Hall on the outskirts of town

A few weeks ago, a local farmer had a dream to bless others with his own good fortune.
Johannes Strydom wanted to lend a hand to those farmers in the drought-stricken areas of South Africa, and his dream quickly transformed into a major fundraising reality at the weekend.
Local businesses jumped in to assist with his Burre Burger Droogtehulp Dans & Spit, with sponsors from all walks of life donating to his worthy cause.
Tickets for the fundraising event sold out and Strydom even had to turn people away.
On Friday night, with the hashtag #laatditpompvirdieboere, residents came together at the Boerevereniging Hall on the outskirts of town.
The mesmerising aroma of pork and lamb on the spit filled the air, together with the laughter of guests who gathered in groups to enjoy a sundowner.
Old favourite and well known artist, Maarten Grobbelaar entertained guests with his live band. Later on in the evening, an auction took place and one of the items up for grabs was a framed and signed Sharks jersey, which raised more than R4 000.
Original founder of the Droogtehulp movement, Burre himself sent a video in which he thanked Strydom and the residents for their contribution.
Burger started this project in March 2017, when he realised farmers in the Karoo and other areas suffered immensely due to there being little to no rainfall. Some lost everything, including their farms, and many helpless animals perished. Burger was invited to the dance and spit, but unfortunately could not attend the function due to prior obligations. As a community, Vryheid raised well over R30 000 for those farmers in need, and Strydom said the full amount would be paid over as soon as possible.
He extended his gratitude to everyone involved and made special mention of the following:
