Sewage creates a genuine stink in Durnacol

Residents said they were tired complaining to the municipality time and again, with no action taken.

What was once a playground in Durnacol can now only be described as a ‘poo ground’, thanks to overflowing human waste.

Fed up with the constant sewage spills, residents contacted the Courier in the hopes of highlighting the problem and finding a solution to it. Sadly though, it’s not just the former playground where the problem persists.

Numerous parts of the area have been plagued by sewage spills, which can be seen spreading across open areas of land, creating a series of foul marshlands.

The unbearable stench can be smelled while driving through the town, especially on hot days. Some residents have even stated the issue is so bad, at times sewage bubbles up their drains into their yards.

Signage discourages residents from swimming and fishing in the dam.

Arguably the worst of the affected area is near the dam, where raw sewage flows straight into the water. The situation has become so problematic, officials have put up signs prohibiting residents from swimming or even fishing in the dam.

The source of the problem is yet to be dealt with. Residents said they were tired of the false promises, having complained to the municipality year after year about the problem with no action. Many have threatened to take the matter up to national Government, believing Amajuba District Municipality has failed them.

When contact for comment, Sbonelo Cebukhulu, Deputy Director for Public Relations at Amajuba District, confirmed a team would be dispatched to deal with the problem.
