Local foundation invited to national radio waves

"This means our work is being recognised and that makes us happy, because our priority is always serving the community."

Members of the Black Child Foundation (BCF) were excited at an invitation to speak on popular national radio station, Gagasi FM in Durban on February 25. The foundation used the opportunity to discuss the community work it does in Newcastle.

The Madadeni-based organisation has been running for four years. A nonprofit entity, BCF seeks to create a suitable environment to support community development. BCF chairperson, Scelo Ndwandwe said being on a national radio show was a blessing for the foundation:

“This means our work is being recognised and that makes us happy, because our priority is always serving the community. Sometimes the challenges we face can make us a bit tired and sad. That’s when we always remind ourselves that the work must carry on. Such recognition is really special and motivates us to do even more, and we never stop praying.”

BCF members, Scelo Ndwande, Zama Magwaza, Nomfundo Mazibuko, Thami Ngubeni and Sifiso Buthelezi (absent) in the radio station’s studio.

BCF adviser, Thami Ngubeni said the foundation was created with the aim of uplifting the community. It has various community and awareness initiatives it focuses on, including a High Schools Drive, where the foundation speaks to learners about business, recognising abuse, the importance of self-confidence and opening their eyes to the real world after high school.

“There’s also a community outreach programme, where we have gone on a ‘Keep Newcastle Clean’ campaign and gathered the community and a few primary schools together, to pick up litter in different areas of Madadeni. We go deep into our communities and identify areas of need, and assist where we can. All the work we have done can be seen our social media page.”

The foundation’s treasurer, Zama Magwaza said BCF was grateful for the support of the community, but explained the foundation still faced numerous challenges:

“We have our biggest programme coming up in June, the Kasi2Kasi Colour Run. Our challenges include securing sound, stage, water and funds for marketing materials, to name a few. Why I say these are challenges, is because we are currently not Government funded, so most things we do come from our own pockets. We are still utterly grateful to all our previous sponsors which have never failed to support us.”
