#SiegeofLadysmith2020 – Parents remove children from school

Panicked parents are collecting children from schools around town

Parents have been spotted fetching children from both Egerton and Monument primary schools. Several other schools are rumoured to be closed or are going to close as the protest action heats up.

Roads such as Ajantha Crescent, Centenary Road, Protea Drive and Burger Street are closed. Streets in Peacetown and other areas are also blocked, as are some entrances leading into town.

We can confirm that the Roosboom road is closed (this can change at any time) and Helpmekaar Road at the intersection.

Protesters launched the shutdown yesterday (February 26), demanding the removal of the mayor, Vincent Madlala, along with other service delivery protests. Several businesses were visited by armed men last night, demanding that they close today. The CBD is a literal ghost town, with very few businesses staying open.

No taxis are operating in town. However, it is believed that a large group of taxis are preparing to converge on the CBD to completely lock down the town.

We will keep you updated on this situation.
