Councillors allege District Mayor abused public funds

"If you calculate the money spent on his security from 2016 up to now, it amounts to R11-million [in] four years."

Amajuba District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane might have some very difficult questions to answer, after he allegedly spent R11-million on his security and his house since 2016.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the district made the allegation in a statement on February 17, calling for an urgent investigation into the alleged misconduct of Dr Ngubane and for his suspension, pending the outcome of the probe.

“The Mayor needs to come forward and explain how the security tender processes were done and which company benefited from this R11-million. It is said that Mayor Ngubane has more than four security personnel with him daily, plus two that are securing his house. Since when must the municipality pay for the Mayor’s home security?”

The IFP in the district further stated it had no confidence in Dr Ngubane’s leadership, calling for his removal from office and for the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Sipho Hlomuka to urgently intervene and establish a task team to investigate the claims.

IFP Whip for the Amajuba District Municipality, Thami Nzuza stated the Mayor did not need so many guards: “Dr Ngubane has two guards at his home that guard in the morning and night, and another two that go with him, and add another two that are on the municipality’s payroll. If you calculate the money spent on his security from 2016 up to now, it amounts to R11-million for the four years.”

Dr Ngubane was unavailable for comment by the time of going to print. Deputy Director in Public Relations for the district municipality, Sbonelo Cebekhulu said he was out of town for the week and could not give a time frame for when response would be given.
