UPDATE: Water supply restored to parts of Newcastle

Normal water supply is expected to resume by 7pm this evening.

An updated has been broadcast regarding the current water situation in Newcastle.

According to a message sent by municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo:

  • A burst pipe has been repaired, which has normalised water supply in Lennoxton, Fairleigh and Paradise
  • Water has been restored to parts of Amajuba Park and Ncandu Park
  • The level of the Northdown Reservoir (situated near the route heading to ArcelorMittal) is very low and a technical team has been dispatched to shut off the outlet, to allow the reservoir to full up again
  • Municipal teams are also inspecting water lines for possible burst pipes, which caused a drastic drop in reservoir levels – this has left Sunnyridge, Pioneer Park and parts of Amajuba and Ncandu Parks without water
  • Municipal teams are also conducting repairs to a burst pipe on Tielmanroos Avenue
  • Water supply is back to normal in Signal Hill and Wards 9, 10, 17 and 32 in Osizweni

Municipal technical teams are also replacing faulty isolation valves and installing new valves to reduce so-called isolation, should a pipe burst. This should prevent similar problems in future.

Water supply is expected to resume by 7pm this evening.
